Ozarks Medical Center Sleep Lab recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
“The AASM is the leading voice in the field of sleep medicine, promoting the highest quality of medical care for people with sleep disorders,” said Dennise Lawson, who oversees the OMC Sleep Lab. “We are very proud of the OMC Sleep Lab program and staff for meeting the rigorous standards set by the AASM.”
The OMC Sleep Lab is a state-of-the-art laboratory equipped to help diagnose sleeping disorders, such as sleep apnea, momentary cessation of breathing while sleeping; insomnia; and narcolepsy, the inability to stay awake.
The staff at the OMC Sleep Lab is trained to help identify an individual’s source of sleep problems, and then work with their personal physician to provide necessary treatment. The staff is composed of health care professionals who are licensed respiratory therapists or registered in polysomnography (sleep studies). Tests are interpreted by a pulmonologist with specialized training in sleep disorders.
To receive a five-year accreditation a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center’s facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts and physician training. Additionally, the facility’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.
The AASM currently accredits more than 1,900 sleep medicine centers and laboratories across the country.
